Golf Flexibility Exercise Identify Golf Muscles
Golf flexibility exercise is a crucial area of the golf game that most golfers either don’t know about or don’t bother with. You can improve your golf game significantly when you perform a regular golf flexibility exercise routine as you will be able to execute a consistent, powerful, and mechanically correct golf swing. We can all benefit from more flexibility but senior golfers are the ones who will see more improvement. Usually, senior golfers will experience a diminishing level of agility and strength because the muscles aren't as elastic and reactive to the physical demands of the golf swing.
More Flexibility Equals More Power and Distance
What many golfers don’t realize is that the more flexibility that you have equates to an increase in power. This increase in power then equates to an increase in golf swing speed and therefore more distance off the tee. Just think about the backswing; you have to turn your shoulders ninety degrees while the hips have to resist turning as much so that you create resistance. When you visualize what you are asking your body to perform you will realize that it takes a lot of suppleness and forceful strength.
If you can remember when you first started playing golf you will no doubt recall the soreness in certain muscles after playing your first few rounds of golf. After playing golf for a while on a regular basis you might not feel any soreness or stiffness in your muscles. Does that mean that you are flexible enough to play golf well? Not necessarily; just by playing golf regularly, you will be naturally strengthening the muscles used in the golf swing and your flexibility will increase – to a point. You may be able to swing the club at 90MPH or so and drive the ball 200 yards but you will be stuck at this level unless you carry out a golf flexibility exercise routine.
Increase Flexibility to Increase Distance
It is a proven fact that the one way to increase your golf swing speed, and therefore your distance off the tee, is to increase your flexibility. For every 10MPH that you can increase your golf swing speed, you will gain about 25 yards off the tee. In reality, to increase your driving distance even more you will also have to work on your golf specific muscles. So if you want to drive the ball 250 yards you will have to swing the club at 110MPH which implies a high degree of flexibility and also more raw power which implies strengthening and toning your golf muscles.
Identifying Your Golf Specific Muscles
One way to identify the specific muscles used in the golf swing is to perform the swing in slow motion or in stages. So start off by getting in the golf address position and break the golf swing down into phases. Take the club back in stages from the 7 o’clock to the 9 o’clock position (the position in the backswing where your club should be parallel to the ground.). Which muscles are you beginning to feel any strain? You might be feeling the strain in your hamstring, left hip, underside of your left arm, or maybe your lumbar region.
Continue taking the club back further; where are you feeling the strain now? You should feel strain in your right shoulder, your trunk, then in your upper left back muscle and left shoulder. Continue this drill all the way up to the top of your backswing and identify all the different muscle groups where you feel strain or pulling. The muscles that you are feeling the strain are your golf specific muscles and these are the ones that you need to stretch and make more flexible.
Golf Flexibility Exercises
The key to improving your golf swing is to start stretching these golf specific muscles that you have identified. Get back in your address position and make a partial swing and stop when you begin to feel strain on your muscles. From that position, continue the swing just a little bit more and hold the position for 10 to 20 seconds. You can then do this throughout the complete swing. This type of flexibility exercise is called static stretching but you will need to include some dynamic stretching as well.
