PostHeaderIcon Golf advice and tips for first timers ??

Me and my friend are juniors in high school and we are going to try out for the golf team. The downside of it is we are the first girls to ever join or even tryout for the golf team. We have never played a full game of golf either. This week was vacation and we have putted and swung a lot. I hope we are ready. The only thing we really need to do know is play a 9 – hole game, we have played on the wii though. Does anybody have any golf advice, tips, or even words of wisdom which we can think about for when we tryout??

This is what I have learned after 12 years of golf.

1. line up the ball with your front heel for driver, gradually move ball back towards to the center of your stance for each club until the pitching wedge, which is directly in the center.

2. Bend knees slightly.

3. Keep good posture in your back (like how you are supposed to sit in a chair), dont "hunch" over the ball.

4. take a smooth, slow backswing while keeping your arms extended and focus on making a full shoulder turn (your back should almost be faceing the target at the top of the swing). Also, try not to let your hips rotate back at all until the top half of your backswing, then let them turn about half as far as your shoulders. The torque increases as the hip turn is minimized and the shoulder turn is maximized (the resistance is like stretching a rubber band.)

5. During the backswing, dont allow your hips to shift laterally. Imagine that someone is pushing on your hip and wont let you slide it backwards during the backswing. But still shift your weight to the back foot.

6. Initiate the down swing by pushing the weight off your back foot to your front, twisting your hips and whipping your shoulders thru. All while maintaining the connection of your arms and shoulders (keeping the club infront of your chest and not letting your arms fold across your chest.)

7. let your wrist natural un hinge and release through the ball.

8. golf is a mental game. it is sometimes better to not focus too much on where the shot will go and trying to control it, all you can do is to swing with good form and hope that you hit it good.

PGA professional golfers like Camilo Villegas, Tiger Woods, Annika Sorenstam, and Lorena Ochoa, all follow a total golfing fitness plan to get to the pinnacle of their game and to remain there. Now, this would possibly not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for the modern approach to golfing, then you want a complete golf fitness plan.

With that said, there is a program from Craig Ballantyne, an internationally famous Certificated Strength and Conditioning Expert and Susan Hill, a nationally recognized golf fitness coach and author for many mags like Golf Illustrated. It’s a complete golf fitness plan called Rapid Fat Loss System for golfers.

PostHeaderIcon Loss of power in the golf swing….??

OK this is a complicated one. I am going to get back into playing a lot again this summer so I want to get my power back. I won my club championship 2 years ago, but have been significantly shorter with all my clubs for about 4 years now. My swing started to get too long and I’ve fixed that for the most part, but along with that it got too up right causing me to flip my hands through the ball, as opposed to rolling them through impact and keeping my hands ahead of the clubface. Thus I don’t compress the ball like I used to and have lost about 10 yards on my irons and quite a bit off the driver. I hit a high ball, but I can play quite well with it, I just want my distance back. Any tips to get my swing more shallow and to compress that ball???

If you are going to "get back into playing a lot again this summer" I’ll assume you haven’t been playing as much recently, right? I’m thinking that just playing more will bring back some yardage.

You also mentioned that you won the "club championship 2 years ago" but you "have been significantly shorter with all my clubs for about 4 years now." Maybe being shorter is a good thing. Did you win any championships over four years ago when you were longer?

When playing golf we do some peculiar things. The main thing better players do is learn is how to score. Scoring comes from putting the ball in good positions to attack pins. However, players that hit it full bore on most shots have to contend with issues of poor accuracy. Even Tiger Woods has learned to back off a little.

I believe that once you start playing (read: practicing) more, then your crisp ball striking will come back. With it will come some (or all) of your lost yardage.

Now, concerning shallowing out your swing…

Ben Hogan states on page 79 of "Five Fundamentals…" the following: "HOWEVER, YOU ARE HEADING FOR DISASTER IF YOU THRUST YOUR ARMS UP ABOVE THE PLANE SO THAT THEY WOULD SHATTER THE PLANE OF GLASS. Poor golfers [I'm not saying you're a poor golfer...poor golfers don't win club championships] make this error at any and all stages of the backswing, but it occurs most commonly when they are nearing the top of the backswing. Then, when their hands are about shoulder high, they suddenly lift their arms almost vertically towards the sky–crash goes the glass… and their shot. They conclude the backswing on an entirely different and far more upright plane, …."

When you start trying to get a little of that lost yardage back, you probably try to get a little more backswing. In doing so I would wagger a small bet that you are lifting your hands towards the end of your backswing instead of continuing AROUND in your backswing. Doing so will cause several bad things to happen. The first thing to go will be accuracy. If you played a slight draw before, then the draw will now be more pronounced. To straighten out the shot, you start blocking the shot by hanging on or you weaken your grip. An overly weak grip then causes you to flip at it to square it up. By this time the whole swing has fallen apart. You lost your fundamentals.

Assuming your fundamentals were sound in the past, your fix is probably very simple and very slight. Don’t go making any sort of major overhauls. Concentrate on the last part of your backswing. Do not let your hands shoot up towards the sky at the very end. You will need to feel your flaw before you can fix it. Swing very slowly and concentrate on the end of your backswing (the part leading up to the transition from back to forward). This is where you’ve gone wrong.

Once you get your swing back on plane, then your ballstriking will return. When you are on plane you don’t have to make any compensations. You just drive through the ball without fear of it turning left (for a right-handed golfer).

One other note… Driver and ball technology has improved in the last few years. You might consider looking into the latest drivers and balls. Your friends can buy an extra ten yards even with their swings. Why not get a little yourself? But first work out the flaw you developed by not playing lately.

Go practice.

PostHeaderIcon Help me with my golf swing consistency?

Seems like some days I hit all my short irons perfectly…I don’t have to even think about my swing…I just do what feels natural. But those same days I can’t hit a wood or a long iron to save my life (typically slice or fade). Other days, I can hit my woods straight and far but I shank or slice all of my short irons, or hit dud iron shots (like 100 yards with a 7 iron).

Sometimes it helps to focus on certain aspects of my swing to temporarily solve the problem (for example, focus on leading with the hips on my wood shots, change my grip slightly, or focus on my backswing tempo on iron shots)…but for each new circumstance, it seems that I have to focus on a different apsect of my swing, such that I start to "micromanage" my swing which gets me all confused, tense, flustered, and bolloxed up.

Are there any good tips for "keeping it simple stupid", so that my swing always feels natural and is always consistent, and I don’t have to worry about focusing on this detail or that detail? I suppose this is the 10 million dollar question in golf, but are there any good things that I should be keeping in mind?

Also, I tend to have slightly different swings, stances, and grips for different clubs. Should I try to work towards keeping the same swing and grip for all my clubs?

the number one thing to get consistency in your came to get a pre-shot routine on every shot of your game and I guarantee you every type of shot in your game will become more consistent. It’s what the pros’ do and what helped me out also.

PostHeaderIcon The Stack and Tilt Dvd Set Review

The “Stack and Tilt” golf swing is a comparatively new or modern swing that is rising in popularity. I have to admit that I have not tried it, because I spent many years trying to dominate the traditional swing until back surgery forced me to change to the simple swing by David Nevogt. But, if you are only starting or if you aren’t pleased with your conventional swing, then here is an outline of the Stack and Tilt golf swing so you can decide if you’d like to try it.

The Medicus Stack and Tilt Dvd Set

The Stack and Tilt golf swing was developed by swing instructors Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett after twenty years of analysis. The Stack & Tilt has been called a revolutionary golfing swing that keeps your weight stacked over the ball for pure contact, shot after shot. There are more golf swing gurus, though, who don’t recommend changing over to it.

Click Here for the Stack and Tilt Golf Swing

More than twenty PGA pros are using the Stack and Tilt golf swing today, including the likes of Mike Weir and Aaron Baddeley. I suspect as more famous pros start using this swing, then more golfing instructors will be available to teach the Stack and Tilt. Until then, if you are curious about learning more, you may find one extremely comprehensive DVD set called GetStacked DVD series.

Here is what the Stack and Tilt golf swing can do for any {golfer: The swing is really easy in nature and it makes for a more compact, clean swing, with less moving body parts and more consistency. It makes it simpler to make contact with the sweet spot of the club; this will allow you to perform a straighter, longer, and more consistent swing.

Address Position

One of the differences between the Stack and Tilt golf swing is that you address the ball with the weight mainly on your left foot (for right handed golfers). As you start your back swing, more weight is moved to your left foot – essentially there’s no weight transfer as the weight stays on the left foot during the golf swing. With the Stack and Tilt, the ball is positioned further to the middle of the stance – even with a driver. Also, the golfer’s hips will be in a more horizontal plane vs the conventional swing where the hips are tilted at an angle.

Top Of The Backswing

The backswing is a little bit shorter than the convention. The middle of the shoulders and hips are in a straight line; this is where the “Stack” comes into it. In a conventional swing, the shoulders would be centered over the right hip. The “Tilt” refers to the angle of the backbone which is slightly angled towards the target.

Impact Position

The position of the head at impact will be over the ball, while traditionally, the head is behind the ball. The hips will continue to be on a level plane while the conventional golfer’s hips will have even more lean than at the address position.

Stack and Tilt DVD Series

As you can understand, it isn’t simple to explain what is happening across the Stack and Tilt golf swing. If you are interested in mastering this swing, then have a look at the GetStacked DVD series. In this DVD Series you will learn the Stack and Tilt swing directly from the creators of the swing – professional swing coaches Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer – the same coaches that have taught Mike Weir and Aaron Baddeley.

If you are struggling with your conventional swing or you just want to try out a simpler swing that promises more distance, consistency, and accuracy, then get the GetStacked DVD series of four DVD’s.
