The Company and The Designer
The Bobby Jones Golf Company was started by the family of the legendary Bobby Jones and Walter Rosenthal, a skilled entrepreneur with a passion for golf and business shrewdness. Rosenthal seized the opportunity to combine two important golfing names – Bobby Jones and Jesse Ortiz.
Jesse Ortiz is regarded as one of the premier golf club designers in the world, and has more than 35 years of experience in the golf industry. He started as a club maker in 1968, and he was instrumental in growing Orlimar Golf Company into a $100 million enterprise.
Ortiz left his post as the Chief Designer of Orlimar Golf Company in 2003 and soon formed his own company, the Ortiz Design Studio™. He produced a line of metal woods and hybrids that reflects his innovation and artistry. Now the master craftsman is paired with the greatest name in the game; Bobby Jones.
With Ortiz as chief designer, The Bobby Jones Golf Company unveiled a new driver, the Bobby Jones Workshop Edition by Jesse Ortiz. With his new driver, Ortiz has considerably improved performance with ground-breaking geometric shapes. The Workshop Edition driver provides a superlative combination of power and forgiveness while boasting an elegant and exotic look.
Even Bob Jones IV is confident about this union of great golf names. “We have worked hard to ensure that Bobby Jones is associated with nothing less than first-class products. Jesse Ortiz is the only designer today we trust to create golf clubs that are ‘best in breed,’ like my great-grandfather.”
Technology
The Bobby Jones Workshop Edition driver by Jesse Ortiz uses the USGA maximum dimensions of 460cc and five-inch-by-five-inch. The driver’s triangular shape increases the “gear effect,” which results in maximum correction on off-center hits and improves upon the competing square-head designs. A square-head driver helps correct extreme heel and toe miss-hits, but it does not effectively correct those hit slightly off center.
The efficiency of the club’s triangular shape is characterized by Ortiz’ trademarked “Triangle of Stability™” which limits the use of inefficient mass often found in square-head designs. Instead, Ortiz repositioned this weight deep and directly behind the center of the impact zone, thus maximizing the club’s “gear effect” which improves trajectory and reduces the spin rate.
“I prefer to design a club for maximum forgiveness on 95% of shots, not for the 5% of extremely poor ones,” Ortiz said, when explaining why the triangular design exceeds square-head options in playability and performance.
Milled with Russian Beta Titanium (BT-23), the face of the driver provides a distinctive sound and feel. The elimination of score-lines creates a more rigid face, further reducing shot deflection. The club features weight-reducing graphite composite crowns and toe pieces.

Conclusion
The Bobby Jones Workshop Edition by Jesse Ortiz is an ideal driver for mid to high handicap golfers. You should take into account that the driver produces a higher than normal launch angle, so you may want to consider a lower loft. For example, the 12.5 degree loft is for gofers with swing speeds of 80MPH or lower.
The vast majority of customer comments that I have found all over the web are positive. The general consensus is that the driver is user friendly, forgiving, and that the ball goes long and straight consistently.
As a final accolade, this Bobby Jones driver won the 2008 “Best of the Best” Driver from RankMark.com. These guys don’t review clubs – they test them with real golfers of various handicaps.
