PostHeaderIcon Golf advice and tips for first timers ??

Me and my friend are juniors in high school and we are going to try out for the golf team. The downside of it is we are the first girls to ever join or even tryout for the golf team. We have never played a full game of golf either. This week was vacation and we have putted and swung a lot. I hope we are ready. The only thing we really need to do know is play a 9 – hole game, we have played on the wii though. Does anybody have any golf advice, tips, or even words of wisdom which we can think about for when we tryout??

This is what I have learned after 12 years of golf.

1. line up the ball with your front heel for driver, gradually move ball back towards to the center of your stance for each club until the pitching wedge, which is directly in the center.

2. Bend knees slightly.

3. Keep good posture in your back (like how you are supposed to sit in a chair), dont "hunch" over the ball.

4. take a smooth, slow backswing while keeping your arms extended and focus on making a full shoulder turn (your back should almost be faceing the target at the top of the swing). Also, try not to let your hips rotate back at all until the top half of your backswing, then let them turn about half as far as your shoulders. The torque increases as the hip turn is minimized and the shoulder turn is maximized (the resistance is like stretching a rubber band.)

5. During the backswing, dont allow your hips to shift laterally. Imagine that someone is pushing on your hip and wont let you slide it backwards during the backswing. But still shift your weight to the back foot.

6. Initiate the down swing by pushing the weight off your back foot to your front, twisting your hips and whipping your shoulders thru. All while maintaining the connection of your arms and shoulders (keeping the club infront of your chest and not letting your arms fold across your chest.)

7. let your wrist natural un hinge and release through the ball.

8. golf is a mental game. it is sometimes better to not focus too much on where the shot will go and trying to control it, all you can do is to swing with good form and hope that you hit it good.

    - Keep your head down, don’t follow the ball with your head until it’s already well into the air.

    - Try not to rotate your hips too much.

    - Don’t try to hit the ball, try to hit under it.

    - Keep your knees bent.

hit through the ball and keep your head down. Always make a divot with irons and align ur shoulders left of the target. Smooth swing that has a consistant tempo. Feet shoulder width apart.

Take lessons if possible just to get an understanding of the basics. Develop a pre-shot routine. Golf is all repetition. If you do the same thing correctly all the time, you will hit the kind of shots you want to hit. Play the game that fits you.

Best advice is to learn proper golf etiquette!! Nobody is going to care how good or bad you are as long as you act accordingly on the golf course. If anyting, just remember these 5:

Fix your ball marks on greens (the indentation your ball makes when it hits the putting surface)
Replace your divots (any chunks of grass you may gouge out)
Rake bunkers after you’ve been in them
    Don’t distract other players
    Keep UP!

You can observe proper etiquette and have fun at the same time. Have fun and good luck!

Does your school have a girls team? If so, are boys allowed to try out for the girls team. Maybe try out for the girls team? If you never played or practiced golf, and you’re trying out against people that have been playing possibly since they were 5, I think you’d be wasting your time and the coach’s time. I’ve played golf almost every weekend for about the last 15 years and I’m a 10 handicap- I took up golf when I was 22. Whenever I play against a highschool kid that’s been playing since youth and taking proper lessons, I find out how terrible I really am, and also how bad the rest of the 12 guys I play with are-who range in age from 22-70. Think of something you’re really talented at doing, and then a first timer trying to compete with you. Your question sounds kind of silly now, doesn’t it?

**someone already voted this answer down. These two girls have only played golf on a video game, but want advice for trying out. If they bother to tryout after only playing on a video game, I think they would be wasting the coach’s and other player’s time. This would show a lot of disrepect to someone trying to help some kids play golf. Who knows, maybe if you have a nice butt the coach may let you play a few holes so he/she can watch you make fools of yourself.

Also, I’m sure if you were trying to put a team together and some jokesters showed up and disrupted your tryout, you’d be a bit annoyed. Have you spoken to your father about his? Does he play golf? What about mom? Does she play? Is she supportive?

first would be to try to go to golf clinic or take a lesson or two. Also learn the rules and etiquette of the game. I would also suggest when you swing don’t swing to the ball but through the ball, try to get to your other side when swinging but get there in balance. And whether or not you make the team, try to have fun and enjoy the game.
